Steeledale Contributes to Growing Up Africa’s Devland Project

Steeledale strongly believes in contributing to the communities in which we work and live. To this end, over the past three years, Steeledale contributes to Growing Up Africa, a registered not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to improve quality of life in developing communities. The organisation collaborates with university students, designers, building professionals and local community leaders to develop its projects.

Lebo Sephoti, Chief Business Development Officer of Steeledale, states that the company is a majority Black Women Owned company operating under the Kutana Investment Group, and broad-based empowerment and transformation is a key imperative that forms part of its strategy. This Project affirms Steeledale’s commitment to social participation and contribution to its broader environment.

Schalk Burger, Steeledale’s Chief Executive Officer, added that Steeledale is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen and as such is focused not only on financial metrics but on the “triple bottom line” which includes the social and environmental impact of the business, and that initiatives such as the Devland Project shows this commitment.

Steeledale contributes over R1.7 million in steel since 2014 – approximately 127 tons – towards Growing Up Africa’s projects, particularly the Devland Education Campus in Soweto, which is showcased at the 2017 Totally Concrete and African Construction Expo.

Deborah Terhune, founder of Growing Up Africa, has a vision for promoting projects and strategies by introducing humanitarian architecture in the built environment, especially in underserved communities, to assist communities in increasing their overall well being, and drive economic growth.

The Devland project has been designed for high performance, high connectivity and high creativity. It is an inspiration to the dormant creativity of those that live within the walls of the shacks and RDP houses.

This vision has proved to be an excellent fit for Steeledale’s strategy of “Doing well, while doing good”. Steeledale is proud to have been part of this initiative and will continue to contribute towards its success.
