13 Facebook Supporters Donate and 4 individuals, making the UJ student-led BIO Pod project a reality! Steel Studio matched the 50% raised!
"Thank you for supporting the UJ students. Growing Up Africa's mission is to promote collaboration and in the case of the student-led BIO Pod project, without collaboration their work would not be possible." Deborah Terhune
The Devland Soweto Education Campus welcomes the Bio Pod. Collaboration. Nature. Growth.
Our Story
We are two qualified female, University of Johannesburg, Industrial Designers, building our skills to the next level, by expanding on our degree, to an Honours qualification.
During this course, we were invited by Deborah Terhune, Founder of Growing Up Africa, to create an inspiring design to be installed on the campus.
Design Team
We are Dominic and Belinda (left to right). We initially started off as 15 students, 5 groups. We decided to design the Bio Pod, an outdoor work place to be installed on the campus, dedicated to its occupants.
Process to Present
Steel Studio has partnered with us to manufacture the mild steel structure, consisting of 10mm laser cut panels, with 12.7 diameter tubes slotted through, enhancing the curved and collaborative feel. Steel Studio will further fund 50% of the manufacturing cost.
We initially thought we would make the design out of concrete and met with the CEO, Mike Els of WACOAfrica and Darryl Voysey, National Operations Director at Formscaff.
In the end it was more feasible to manufacture out of metal, therefore the design was altered for manufacture and made cost effective by the assistance of Steel Studio.
Prepping Begins
Over the next few weeks we are finalizing the placement of the design and will be in the process of prepping the foundation. We can't wait to hear what you think about our design!
